When I started purchasing Vallejo paints it was not long before I had paint bottles all over my painting desk and no way to organize them. While there are many different paint storage containers available, I eventually decided to make my own. Here are the specs to mine. It took less than a day to put together plus a day to let the paint dry! The finished rack is 22" tall by 24 1/2" wide and has 6 shelves spaced 3 1/4" except for the bottom shelf which is a 4" shelf. capable to hold over 130 bottles of Vallejo paint.
Parts list:
- 1 - 22"x24 1/2" 1/4" panelling.
- 10' - 3/8x3/8" pine trim
- 18' - 1 1/2"x1/4" pine trim. This can be 2 10' pieces or any combination of pieces thereof however the smallest piece needs to be 24"
- Carpenters wood glue (not elmers white glue, it needs to be a strong wood glue
Take the 1 1/2" trim and glue the 4 surround pieces around the inside of the edge of the panel piece.
Next fit the 5 shelves into position by measuring from the bottom of the top surround to the bottom of the shelf. This should be 3 1/2" You should end up with a 4" space for the bottom shelf. That is okay! Do not glue yet.
Once you have fit all five shelves glue the 3/8" trim to the front edge of each shelf. Do NOT glue a trim piece to the bottom surround piece. While this is optional, the rack will work with out it, I STRONGLY encourage you to add this trim piece as one bump of your table may result in you having to put your paints back on the shelves! Up until recently this was my suggestion. HOWEVER, I have now started receiving some of the 2nd generation Vallejo Paints and in their infinite wisdom, they decided to move the paint color to the bottom of the label, REDUCE the font size, and put the position code on the opposite side of the name of the paint! Yeesh! As such if you put the retainer trim piece on the shelf you will not be able to see the name of the paint. I have reached out to Vallejo, and will let you know if/when they respond and what they say about this.
Once the shelf keepers are dry go ahead and glue the 5 shelves into the rack making sure to maintain the spacing discussed above.
Finally you can spray paint it any color you want. I sprayed mine black so that the paint bottles stood out. Nah I painted it black because it looks cool black!
