I have used both Spray on and brush on Primer. For models from Vintage moulds where the detail is lacking, the spray on primer is fine. If you are painting models from newer moulds or moulds with significant detail then you may want to consider brushing on the primer.

As for color of the primer, I am not sure it really makes a difference! General wisdom is that you use Grey normally with white used for lighter and brighter colors, while black primer is used to create darker colors. I have to confess that I have not been able to tell the difference between the models I have painted based on the color of the primer. So... Your call.
