Some models have such intricate detail that spray painting them can result in a loss of detail. Models from moulds of the 20's thru 50's however typically do not have a great deal of detail and therefore are good candidates for using primer from a spray can. However they are still relatively small targets and the likelyhood of primer ending up where you don't want it is fairly high.

I use a small cardboard box (come on you must have boxes from Amazon piling up around the house somewhere...). It should be at least 14" or so square. A little taller is fine. Place it on its side and put a lazy susan inside. They are only a few dollars and when you place your model on it you can spray the model, turn the lazy susan and spray the other side of the model without having to touch your model. The Lazy Susan does not need to be large, a 4 to 6" one will work just fine for most models.
NOTE: you really need use spray can outside. Never spray inside your home.
